Interviewer: Dr Rav Singh Topper: Vikas
Dr Rav Singh: Moving to the GDPI preparation, what was Vikas‘s mojo factor—the main factor that worked?
Vikas: For me, the main factor was reading The Hindu every day. I maintained three months of newspaper clippings. You have to read up on everything that’s currently going on—you can’t just rely on videos. Reading the newspaper gives you the necessary content and fluency for speaking on those topics in the interview.
Dr Rav Singh: What was your Group Exercise (GE) topic?
Vikas: As far as I remember, there was a picture of Nirmala Sitharaman with a budget in hand. We had to discuss the implications and details related to the budget. The activities and topics change every year, so you need broad current affairs knowledge.
Dr Rav Singh: What did the intensive 10-day prep teach you that also applied to the interview?
Vikas: It taught me the importance of being triggered by information. Just like a question should trigger a formula, a current affairs topic should immediately trigger analysis. That mental agility gained during the SNAP speed run is directly applicable to the rapid-fire nature of the PI.
Dr Rav Singh: What is the most important thing to remember about the interview structure?
Vikas: Remember that only 50% of the weightage is for the SNAP score; the remaining 50% is for the GEPI. The panel is looking to see if you have the mettle. They want to check if you are a rote learner or someone who can genuinely converse about contemporary issues.
Dr Rav Singh: You mentioned taking calculated risks in the exam. Did that mindset help in the GDPI?
Vikas: Yes. In the exam, I would guess when down to two options. In the interview, that translates to taking an educated stand. You must be prepared to articulate and defend a position on a contemporary issue. It’s about taking an intelligent stand, not just guessing.
Dr Rav Singh: What is the final tip for interview readiness?
Vikas: You have to be genuine. The interviews last for 15-25 minutes, and they are good at spotting someone who rehearses and comes in as an actor. Be yourself, know your stuff, and let the conversation flow.
