The GAP year Guide: PI Focus and Mindset

Interviewer: Dr Rav Singh
Topper: Shivika (The Dedicated Fresher)

Dr Rav Singh: Were you asked tough questions about your gap year or lack of work experience?

Shivika: Luckily, no. SCMHRD focuses on what you have done. The questions revolved around my decision to switch my specialization from HR to Sales and Marketing. They were testing the logic behind my choices.

Dr Rav Singh: What is the key to demonstrating competence as a fresher with a gap year?

Shivika: I highlighted my personal development and recent skills. They were interested in my hobbies and any recent skills I had learned, like a stock market course. This shows productive use of time. I focused on channeling my energy into being prepared and genuine for the interview.

Dr Rav Singh: What is the problem with the time crunch—only two weeks to prepare for the interview?

Shivika: You have to focus on everything related to you: your background, your education, and why MBA. You must also be sure about those HR questions. For General Knowledge, following the SCMHRD PR weekly campaign helped me track current affairs. You must divide your time equally to prepare all aspects.

Dr Rav Singh: What is the most crucial preparation during those two weeks?

Shivika: The most crucial part is channeling your energy. If you already have a good SNAP score, your confidence is high. You just need to be prepared to articulate your reasoning. Be clear about your career switch and the steps you’ve taken to prepare for it.

Dr Rav Singh: What was the theme of your PI?

Shivika: The interview was built around my life’s trajectory. They want to check your decision-making. They were interested in what I was bringing to the table and if I was ready to commit to the specialization.
